A dupe exists because a formula is ordinary. Most of what gets sold at a premium is a common set of ingredients in a nicer bottle, and when that is true somebody will make the same thing for a quarter of the money within about eighteen months. That is not a scandal. It is the market working.

This edit is about the exceptions, and what makes something an exception is worth being precise about, because it is only ever one of four things. A molecule somebody owns. A process too slow and expensive to be worth imitating. A distribution model that keeps the product away from the people who would copy it. Or, occasionally, a formula so plain and so old that nobody has ever seen the point of trying.

Wherever the brand publishes an ingredient list, we read it, and that is where the best evidence in this edit turned out to be: skinbetter's patent is sitting in plain sight in its own ingredient list, and Lotion P50 declares more fragrance allergens than anything else on The Shelf. It also turned up a gap, which we have flagged on the product it belongs to rather than glossed over.

Nobody has copied this, and the ingredient list explains why. Five acids, niacinamide and sulfur in one water-based lotion, from a brand that will not sell it in a department store. Every product sold as a P50 alternative reproduces the acids and leaves out everything else, which is most of it.

The patent is visible in the ingredient list, which almost never happens. Ethyl Lactyl Retinoate is a retinoid and a lactic acid bonded into a single molecule rather than mixed in a single jar. Anyone can put a retinol and an acid in one cream. Nobody else can put that ingredient in one.

  • One molecule doing what people usually alternate two products to do
  • Ceramide NP, squalane and two peptides in the same formula, so it is also the moisturizer
  • Nothing fragranced in the list, which is rare in this price bracket

The moat is the process, not the plants. More than twenty whole botanicals infused over weeks rather than blended in an afternoon, which the brand is openly upfront about being slower and more expensive than the alternative. You can buy every oil on this list. You cannot buy the weeks.

  • One bottle covers what an oil, a serum and a night treatment would otherwise do
  • Nothing is hiding behind the word fragrance

  • The brand's own claim is narrow: oily and blemish prone skin, not everyone
  • It is the middle of this edit on price, not the top
