What We’d Pair With a Retinoid

The retinoid is the easy part. Surviving the first six weeks is the shelf.

What We’d Pair With a Retinoid

A retinoid routine is only as good as everything surrounding it. There are no retinoids on this page, deliberately. These are the six things we would put either side of one: a cleanser that does not strip, a ceramide serum that layers under whatever you own, a light moisturizer and a richer one depending on how your skin is behaving that week, the ointment for the nights it has stopped behaving at all, and the mineral sunscreen that makes the whole exercise worth doing. Six roles, one product each.

This shelf grows. We add entries as products clear the bar, never to fill space.

Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream
01

Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream

Moisturizers South Korea Approx. $17

Three ceramides with panthenol, hyaluronic acid and centella for seventeen dollars, fragrance free. If you are running a retinoid, this is the kind of cream that lets you keep running it, because the week you cannot tolerate the retinoid is the week you stop using it altogether.

  • Three ceramides plus panthenol
  • Fragrance free
  • Cheap enough to apply generously

Cetaphil Ceramide Serum Skin Barrier Repair
02

Cetaphil Ceramide Serum Skin Barrier Repair

Serums USA Approx. $12

A serum rather than a cream, which matters when your routine already has a moisturizer you like. Ceramides, panthenol, hyaluronic acid and centella at thirteen dollars, fragrance free. It slots underneath whatever you already use rather than replacing it.

  • Barrier repair in a serum, not a cream
  • Fragrance free
  • Layers under your existing moisturizer

BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream
03

BYOMA Moisturizing Gel Cream

Moisturizers USA Approx. $14

The lighter BYOMA, for people pairing a retinoid with skin that is oily rather than dry. Niacinamide, panthenol, ceramides and glycerin in a gel cream, fragrance free, fourteen dollars. Barrier support that does not feel like a heavy cream is genuinely hard to find at this price.

  • Barrier ingredients in a gel texture

RoC Barrier Renew Gel-To-Foam Cleanser
04

RoC Barrier Renew Gel-To-Foam Cleanser

Cleansers USA Approx. $13

If you are running a retinoid, the cleanser matters more than people admit, because a stripping wash undoes the barrier work overnight. This one turns from gel to foam and costs thirteen dollars.

  • Gentle enough to use on retinoid nights
  • Thirteen dollars
  • From the barrier line, not the exfoliating one

The occlusive of record: petrolatum with panthenol and glycerin, the ointment dermatology reaches for on compromised, post-procedure, and retinoid-chapped skin. As the final “slugging” layer over a routine, nothing evidence-based beats it per dollar.

  • The definitive occlusive seal
  • Petrolatum’s safety record is unmatched
  • One tube serves face, lips, cuticles, elbows

SkinMedica Essential Defense Mineral Shield SPF 35
06

SkinMedica Essential Defense Mineral Shield SPF 35

Sunscreens USA Approx. $40

The role this shelf was missing. A retinoid makes skin more sun-sensitive, so daily SPF stops being optional, and a hundred percent mineral filter is the least likely thing to sting a face that is already peeling. It is the most expensive thing here by some distance, and the one place on a retinoid routine we would not economise.

  • Mineral filters only, which sensitised skin tolerates best
  • No tint, so it works on every skin tone on this shelf
  • The one item here worth paying more for
Texture
An untinted mineral lotion that sets to a soft finish
Key ingredients
Zinc oxide · Titanium dioxide
Fragrance
Not stated

The step that makes the retinoid worth doing at all.
