High Maintenance: Luxury Makeup Worth the Extra Money

There are sensible purchases, and then there is a foundation that costs more than dinner. This is where expensive makeup has to defend itself. We chose formulas whose price makes us ask a second question, what exactly are we paying for, and kept the ones with an answer: texture, finish, pigment, wear, packaging, or the plain pleasure of using them.

Ten products that make their case. The two hundred and thirty five dollar Sisley foundation, the Chantecaille cushion, the Japanese moisture foundation, a tinted hydrator that is more skincare than makeup, a serum foundation from a Paris colorist, the thirty seven dollar Kevyn Aucoin pot that does foundation, concealer and corrector, a powder blush that behaves like a cream, a refillable Sisley lipstick at seventy three dollars, a Chantecaille powder foundation with a sponge in the lid, and a Sisley eyeshadow that costs sixty eight dollars for one color and somehow sells out.

Luxury is allowed to be frivolous. It is not allowed to be boring. It has to be a pleasure to use and it has to work. If a formula manages only one, the packaging can sit on someone else's vanity.
