This is not the expensive makeup edit. We already have one of those, and the question it answers is whether a costly thing is worth its price. The question here is different and narrower: is there anything else that does this at all?

Eight products, and the answer is no in every case. What is interesting is how little that has to do with money. Four of these cost under forty dollars, and the twenty three dollar eyelash curler is as uncopied as the seventy eight dollar concealer. Two are protected by patents. One is protected by a nine ingredient formula that reads like it should be easy to copy and has not been in thirty years. One is protected by being nearly forty years old and slightly odd. And one is protected by a curve of steel the industry has measured itself against since the eighties.

A note on what we left out. The most duped products in makeup are duped precisely because they are good and simple, and a famous nude lip liner very nearly made this list before we remembered that half the internet sells a version of it. Being iconic is not the same as being uncopyable, and this edit is only about the second one.

It has been the reference concealer for two decades and the dupe lists never settle, which is the tell. When something is genuinely copyable, the internet agrees on the copy within a season. Nobody agrees on this one, because what is being copied is a texture rather than a formula, and texture is the hard part.

Nine ingredients. Read that list and it looks like something anyone could make, and thirty years of nobody making it says otherwise. It has been in professional kits since the nineties because it is the only thing with that consistency: solid enough to sit where you put it, thin enough to become a foundation if you work it.

Everything sold as a lip and cheek stain since is descended from it, and none of them have displaced it, which is unusual for a product this simple and this old. The formula is the entire brand's origin story and it has never needed a relaunch.

The idea is that the correction happens in the mix rather than in the formula: four tinted pearls picked up together on a brush, so the colours cancel each other on the way to your face.
