Read the Objects department back and you would think a decent routine costs a thousand dollars. A two hundred and fifty dollar mirror. A two hundred dollar hair dryer. A hundred and eighty dollar steamer, a hundred and sixty nine dollar showerhead. Every one of them earns its place and we would write them up again tomorrow. Not one of them is the thing you actually pick up most days.

So this is the counterweight, and we mean it as a correction to our own shelf rather than a gimmick. Eight objects between nine and thirty dollars. Nothing here has a battery, an app, a firmware update or a warranty worth reading. Four of the eight cost less than the shipping on some of what we have recommended.

Most of them are not photogenic and three are faintly embarrassing to own. The test was simple and it is the only test that matters at this price: would you notice tomorrow if it was gone. Everything below is here because the answer was yes, and because a nine dollar thing you use twice a day beats a two hundred dollar thing you use twice a month.

The teeth here are two lengths and they flex, which is the entire idea and the reason it costs eleven dollars rather than eighty.

This is the ten dollar thing you use wet, once you are already in there, and it is doing a job the dry brush does not: it replaces the loofah, which is the single least hygienic object most bathrooms contain. It dries flat against the wall instead of staying damp in a corner.

  • It dries out completely between uses, which is the entire point and the thing a loofah never does
  • Soft enough for skin that finds a dry brush too harsh
