The Red Light Rabbit Hole: Red Light Therapy for People Who Have Gone All In

We started with the face mask. Somehow there is now a red light shower.

The Red Light Rabbit Hole: Red Light Therapy for People Who Have Gone All In

It begins reasonably. A red light mask, ten minutes in the evening, the sort of thing that fits between the toothbrush and the pillow. Then the mask has a neck piece, and the neck piece has a body mat, and one day you are reading the specification sheet for a shower head that filters the water and glows. This page runs the descent backwards: the mat and the shower head first, the starter mask last.

Ten products, from a three hundred dollar mask to a full-body mat, including all three finishes of the HigherDOSE shower filter because the choice between matte black, brass and chrome is, at this depth of the rabbit hole, a real decision. Every wavelength printed here is the manufacturer's stated figure; red light in cosmetics is sold on the appearance of skin, and that is the only thing we describe. Several of the masks also stand in our At-Home Treatment Room, where they are compared against the appointment rather than against each other.

The mat and the shower head belong to wellness more than skincare, which is why this page lives in that department. They are for people who have already decided that red light is part of the day and want more of the day covered. If you are not that person yet, start with the mask, and come back when the neck piece starts to look reasonable.

HigherDOSE Full Body Red Light Mat
01

HigherDOSE Full Body Red Light Mat

Devices USA Approx. $1199

The HigherDOSE mat is the point where red light stops being a facial and becomes furniture: a full-length panel of 660nm red and 850nm near-infrared you lie on, lie under, or hang on a wall. Twelve hundred dollars for the whole body in one session, with the near-infrared pulsed at 40Hz.

  • The whole body at once
  • Two wavelengths, one of them pulsed
  • Flat, hung, or folded
  • Twelve hundred dollars, so be honest with yourself

02

HigherDOSE Red Light Shower Filter, Matte Black

Devices USA Approx. $599

A shower head with a rechargeable ring of red and near-infrared light around it and a ten-stage filter inside it. The pitch is consistency: you already shower, so the light session happens whether you meant it to or not. About ten showers per charge.

  • The one red light session you cannot skip
  • A real water filter underneath the gimmick
  • Fits a standard US shower
  • Matte black

HigherDOSE Red Light Shower Filter, Polished Brass
03

HigherDOSE Red Light Shower Filter, Polished Brass

Devices USA Approx. $599

The same head, the same detachable light ring and the same filter as the black one, in polished brass. We list all three finishes because the idea of a red light shower is odd enough once; three finishes of it at five hundred and ninety nine dollars each is the whole story of this shelf.

  • Identical inside to the black
  • Brass, if your bathroom is brass
  • Ten showers per charge
  • The absurdity is the point

HigherDOSE Red Light Shower Filter, Polished Chrome

Devices USA Approx. $599

The third finish. Same red and near-infrared ring, same ten-stage filter, same ten showers per charge, in the chrome most American bathrooms already have. If you are going to do this, this is the one that will not look like a purchase.

  • Identical inside to the other two
  • Chrome matches most fittings
  • Ten showers per charge
  • The least conspicuous of the three

FOREO FAQ Dual LED Panel
05

FOREO FAQ Dual LED Panel

Devices Sweden Approx. $899

FOREO's professional line, FAQ, put 512 LEDs into a fold-out panel you set on a stand rather than strap to your face, which is how you get the neck and chest in the same session. Five wavelengths including two near-infrared bands, app-unlocked, and gold because FAQ does everything in gold.

  • A panel, so nothing sits on your skin
  • Five wavelengths, two of them infrared
  • Covers the neck and chest the masks miss
  • Folds flat
