The Healthy Hair Edit

Which treatments work inside the hair, which only smooth the outside, and why the difference is worth knowing before you spend seventy-five dollars.

The Healthy Hair Edit

There are two categories sold under the same word. One rebuilds bonds inside the hair and changes how it behaves. The other coats the outside and changes how it looks and feels, immediately and temporarily. Both are useful. Only one of them is repair, and the price does not tell you which is which.

So we sorted these by what the ingredient list supports. The bond treatments are first, the cosmetic finishers are last, and each entry says which it is. If your hair is not actually damaged, the honest answer is that you only need the second group.

Some links below are affiliate links. If you buy through them, SkinSourcer may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. It never changes what we pick or what you pay.

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask
01

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask

Treatments USA Approx. $75

The peptide is the whole product and it is the only one of its kind at this price. Four minutes on damp hair, no rinse, and you are done.

  • The shortest treatment step in this edit
  • Genuinely changes how damaged hair handles
  • Fifty millilitres goes further than it looks
Texture
Light cream that disappears into damp hair
Key ingredients
sh- Oligopeptide-78 · Cetearyl Alcohol · Propylene Glycol · Behentrimonium Chloride
Fragrance
Scented. Parfum plus declared geraniol, hexyl cinnamal and linalool.

Worth it on damaged hair. Pointless on hair that is not damaged. Note that alcohol denat. sits second in the list.

Living Proof Triple Bond Complex
02

Living Proof Triple Bond Complex

Treatments USA Approx. $45

A pre-shampoo bond step that does not also try to be a conditioner, which keeps it in the routine rather than replacing something that already works.

  • The least expensive bond treatment in this edit
  • Ten minutes before shampoo and nothing else in the routine changes
  • Layers under everything without pilling
Texture
Thin lotion, no residue
Key ingredients
Cetyl Alcohol · Glyceryl Stearate · Isodecyl Oleate · Sodium Phytate
Fragrance
Scented. Parfum plus declared citronellol, hexyl cinnamal, limonene and linalool.

The entry point into bond repair. Forty-five dollars, and the K18 is the next step up rather than a rival.

K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil
03

K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil

Treatments USA Approx. $65

A hair oil with no silicone in it at all, built on squalane and avocado instead. That is unusual enough in this category to be the reason to buy it.

  • Silicone free, which almost no shine oil is
  • Does not build up over a week
  • Two drops is the whole dose
Texture
Dry oil, no silicone weight
Key ingredients
Squalane · Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil · Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil · Caprylyl Caprylate/Caprate
Fragrance
Scented. Parfum plus declared hexyl cinnamal, limonene and linalool.

The one to reach for if silicones have stopped working for you.

Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque
04

Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque

Treatments USA Approx. $72

This is a serious conditioning masque and it is honest about being one. The cationics that do the work sit right at the top of the list.

  • Detangles coarse hair in one pass
  • The Oribe scent is the point for a lot of people
  • A little goes a long way at this size
Texture
Dense conditioning masque
Key ingredients
Behentrimonium Chloride · Cetearyl Alcohol · Amodimethicone · Dimethicone
Fragrance
Scented. Parfum plus declared hexyl cinnamal and limonene.

Moisture, not repair. Pair it with a bond treatment rather than instead of one.

Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil
05

Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil

Treatments USA Approx. $32

It is the one finishing oil here that also carries the bond ingredient, so it sits on both sides of this Edit's argument at once.

  • Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, the Olaplex bond ingredient, at position six
  • A few drops is genuinely enough
  • Thirty two dollars, the cheapest thing on this shelf
Texture
Very light silicone oil, high shine
Key ingredients
Dimethicone · Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate · Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil · Tocopherol
Fragrance
Scented. Parfum plus declared hexyl cinnamal, limonene, citral, linalool and citronellol.

Read the list before you believe the name. Dimethicone is first and two more silicones follow, so most of what you see immediately is surface shine. The bond ingredient is real but it is far down a mostly silicone formula. Fragranced, with five declared allergens.

Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo
06

Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo

Cleansers USA Approx. $33

The wash-day step of the patent that started the bond category. The No.7 oil already lives on this shelf; this is the maintenance shampoo built on the same molecule, which makes it the rare shampoo that belongs to the repair half of this edit rather than the cosmetic half.

  • The original patented bond chemistry, in the shower
  • Maintains salon treatments between visits
  • Pairs with the oil this shelf already keeps
Texture
A low-lather bonding shampoo
Key ingredients
Bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate
Fragrance
Scented

The bond patent, on wash day.

Oribe Hair Alchemy Bond Building Leave-In Treatment
07

Oribe Hair Alchemy Bond Building Leave-In Treatment

Treatments USA Approx. $78

Oribe's answer to the bond category, in the leave-in format the category mostly skips. The Gold Lust line on this shelf is about richness; Hair Alchemy is about strength in featherweight form, for the hair that cannot carry another heavy masque.

  • Bond repair for hair too fine for masques
  • Leave-in, so it works all day
  • Oribe polish on a functional category
Texture
A lightweight leave-in lotion for fragile lengths
Key ingredients
Bond-building complex · Plant proteins
Fragrance
Scented; Oribe's signature

Strength, in Oribe's lightest register.

Virtue Healing Gloss
08

Virtue Healing Gloss

Treatments USA Approx. $44

The in-shower sibling of the Healing Oil already on this shelf, built on the same human-identical keratin. Where the oil finishes, the gloss treats: five minutes in the shower and hair rinses to a glass finish that is protein, not silicone silicone-deep.

  • The same keratin chemistry as the oil, upstream
  • Five minutes, in the shower, done
  • Shine that survives a brush-through
Texture
An in-shower gloss treatment that rinses to shine
Key ingredients
Alpha keratin 60ku
Fragrance
Scented

The bond house's shine move.

Moroccanoil Treatment Original
09

Moroccanoil Treatment Original

Treatments Israel Approx. $50

The product that created the category. Worth knowing that it is a silicone serum first and an argan oil second, in that order on the list.

  • Nothing smooths a coarse blow-dry faster
  • The scent is the most recognisable in hair care
  • One pump covers mid-lengths to ends
Texture
Slippery silicone serum, warms into the hand
Key ingredients
Cyclopentasiloxane · Dimethicone · Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil · Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Extract
Fragrance
Scented. Parfum plus declared coumarin.

Cosmetic smoothing, not repair. Read the first two ingredients before you decide what you are buying.

Mason Pearson Junior Bristle and Nylon BN2
10

Mason Pearson Junior Bristle and Nylon BN2

Tools United Kingdom Approx. $275

Boar bristle moves the hair's own oil down the shaft in a way nylon cannot, and the mixed tufting is what gets it through density. The Junior is the size most people should buy; the full Popular is bigger than most heads need.

  • Boar and nylon mixed, so it works on thick hair as well as fine
  • The rubber cushion is replaceable, so the brush outlasts the bristles
  • Still made in England, and it is the reference every other brush is measured against
Form
Vulcanised rubber cushion, boar bristle and nylon mixed tufts

Two hundred and seventy five dollars for a hairbrush, and it is the finishing step rather than a detangler. Buy it once or do not buy it.

Crown Affair The Leave-In Conditioner
11

Crown Affair The Leave-In Conditioner

Treatments USA Approx. $48

Crown Affair’s brush already earns its place on the blowout shelf, and this is the product the brand builds its routine around: a tsubaki-oil leave-in light enough for fine hair. The healthy-hair shelf is strong on repair and thin on the daily in-between step; this is that step.

  • The daily step between wash and style
  • Light enough for fine hair
  • Completes the Crown Affair pairing with the brush
Texture
A weightless milk that detangles and smooths without coating
Key ingredients
Tsubaki oil
Fragrance
Not stated

The in-between step the hair shelf was missing.

Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo
12

Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo

The Shelf already carries Gold Lust’s masque and oil; the shampoo and conditioner complete the wash-day set. If you are buying into this line, this is the pair the rest of it assumes.

  • Completes the Gold Lust system we already stock
  • The wash-day half of the masque’s work
  • A bottle that lasts months
Texture
A dense lather with the signature Oribe scent
Fragrance
Not stated

The first half of the Gold Lust wash day.

Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Conditioner

The everyday counterpart to the Gold Lust masque already on this shelf: same restorative positioning, conditioner-weight, for the six days a week the masque stays on the shelf.

  • The daily version of a masque we already recommend
  • Detangles without weight
  • Completes the set
Texture
A slip-heavy conditioner that detangles on contact
Fragrance

Virtue Healing Oil
14

Virtue Healing Oil

Treatments USA Approx. $46

Virtue’s whole line is built on alpha keratin 60ku, a human-identical keratin protein, and the Healing Oil is its most approachable product. It joins K18 and Olaplex on this shelf as the third of the protein-repair houses, each with a different molecule and a different bet.

  • A third repair chemistry beside K18 and Olaplex
  • Light enough for fine hair
  • The approachable end of a serious line
Texture
A light hair oil that absorbs rather than coats
Key ingredients
Alpha keratin 60ku
Fragrance
Not stated

The third bet in protein repair.

Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream
15

Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream

Styling USA Approx. $54

A styling cream that behaves like a conditioner you do not rinse, which is why it sits with the treatments rather than with the blowout hardware. For coarse or dry hair it does the thing leave-ins usually promise and rarely deliver: adds weight and shine without turning greasy by the afternoon.

  • Moisture first, styling second
  • For coarse and dry hair that leave-ins leave behind
  • Oribe's fragrance and finish, if you like that sort of thing
Texture
A styling cream that moisturises like a leave-in
Fragrance
Not stated

Conditioning that stays in.
