Line these nine up and you have a whole routine. A cleanser, two toners, two treatments, two creams, a mist and a lip balm. The most expensive thing on the shelf is twenty five dollars, and the lot comes to a hundred and seventy six.

What connects them is not the price. It is a way of building a formula that starts with calm and treats strength as something you add later and carefully. Centella in three of them. Heartleaf as the base of a fourth, ahead of the water. Ceramides or cholesterol in four, where most creams at this price would put more water and a thickener. The exfoliating acid is a polyhydroxy acid, which is the slow one. The retinal is a tenth of a per cent.

Two of them come with something you should know before you buy, and both are written on the product rather than buried up here. There is also no sunscreen in this routine, which is the one real gap in it. That has an edit of its own, and it was the first one we ever wrote.

SKIN1004 Centella Toning Toner

This is the toner we nearly filed as one we already sell. The Shelf carries the SKIN1004 Tone Brightening Boosting Toner, which is a different bottle doing a different job. The acid here is gluconolactone, a polyhydroxy acid, and it is the mildest of the common exfoliating acids because the molecule is bulky and works slowly rather than all at once. Centella asiatica extract sits second in the list, straight after water, at a stated 25,715 ppm, which is a real quantity rather than a garnish.

Most toners aimed at oily skin work by taking something away, which is why they leave skin tight and then oilier by the afternoon. This one is unusual in what it uses: aluminium chlorohydrate, the same salt that does the work in an antiperspirant, sitting in a toner alongside rice extract, ceramide NP and sodium hyaluronate. So it handles shine by a different mechanism than stripping, and the hydrating half of the formula is still there underneath.

Anua Heartleaf 70 Intense Calming Cream

The Shelf already sells the Anua Heartleaf 77 toner, and this is not that. It is the cream, and the ingredient list is the argument for it: houttuynia cordata extract is the first ingredient, ahead of everything, and water appears second from last. That is the reverse of how almost every cream on this site is built, and it means the heartleaf is the base of the formula rather than something added to it. Ceramide NP, cholesterol and panthenol are in there doing the barrier work.

Aestura Atobarrier365 Cream Mist

Worth buying and worth a caveat. The bottle says ten thousand ppm ceramides. The ingredient list Aestura publishes does not contain a ceramide. What it does contain is cholesterol, behenic acid and hydroxypropyl bislauramide MEA, which is a pseudo-ceramide, and together those three are the same lipid structure arrived at another way. The formula is good and the mist itself is the best of its kind we have used. We are flagging the gap between the bottle and the list rather than repeating the number.

The blue bottle that has been in French pharmacies for twenty years and outlasts most of what gets recommended alongside it. It is here for the size as much as the formula: thirteen and a half fluid ounces for around twenty dollars is a year of cleansing, and a cleanser is the one step where running out matters. One honest limitation, since this edit is about ingredient lists: La Roche-Posay does not publish a full list anywhere we can reach, so we are naming only the zinc pidolate the brand states and making no claim about fragrance either way.

The Reedle Shot range is a ladder, 50 then 100 then 300, and the number is the strength of the spicules suspended in it. The 300 is the top of that ladder and the brand's own instruction is to use it every third day rather than nightly, which tells you how it should be treated. It goes in the edit because it was in the picture and because it is the one product here worth a warning rather than a recommendation to anyone starting out.

celimax The Vita A Retinal Shot Tightening Booster

Retinal is retinaldehyde, one step along from retinol, and it is normally the expensive end of the shelf. This is nineteen dollars. The tube prints its own numbers, 0.1 per cent retinal, 1 per cent panthenol and 3 per cent Matrixyl 3000, and the ingredient list backs all three up: retinal is there, and Matrixyl 3000 is palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, both of which appear. A tube that prints numbers you can check against its own list is rarer than it should be.

Centellian 24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse

Centellian 24 is the Dongkook Pharmaceutical brand built around madecassoside, and the Time Reverse list is the most crowded in this edit: madecassoside, asiaticoside and asiatic acid, plus niacinamide, panthenol, ceramide NP, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid and retinol. It earns its place on that. One correction we owe you, because we had it on file the other way: this is not fragrance free. There is no parfum in the list, but there is bergamot, lavender, rosemary and four separate citrus peel oils, which is a fragrance by any useful definition. If you are reactive, or you are already using the retinal booster above, this is the one here to think twice about.
