The Scalp Edit

Scalp care is skincare with worse lighting. Eight products that treat it that way, and the four that are genuinely fragrance free.

The Scalp Edit

The scalp is skin. It has the same barrier, the same oil glands and the same capacity to get irritated, and it is the one piece of skin most people wash with detergent and then ignore. Treating it properly is not complicated. It is a serum, occasionally an exfoliant, and a way of getting both down to the surface through hair that is in the way.

We read the INCI on every formula here, and it turned up something worth saying out loud: almost every scalp product on the market is fragranced, and several name three or four declared allergens. If your scalp is reactive, that is probably the variable. Of the six topical formulas here, four are fragrance free; the comb and the gua sha are tools and do not enter into it.

Nécessaire The Scalp Serum
01

Nécessaire The Scalp Serum

Scalp USA Approx. $48

The peptide and red clover pairing sold as Capixyl, in a water-thin base that disappears into the roots. It is the rare scalp serum that leaves fine hair looking clean rather than weighed down.

  • Weightless enough to use on a wash day or a third day
  • The whole formula is nineteen ingredients
Texture
Water-light serum, no slip and no residue
Key ingredients
Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 · Trifolium Pratense (Red Clover) Flower Extract · Sodium Hyaluronate · Niacinamide · Panthenol
Fragrance
Fragrance free. No parfum and no declared allergens in the list.

The one to start with, and the only fragrance-free option we would put beside it is Act+Acre.

Act+Acre Stem Cell Scalp Serum
02

Act+Acre Stem Cell Scalp Serum

Scalp USA Approx. $86

Aloe is the second botanical in the list, not a footnote, and the formula is built on humectants rather than actives. It is a calm serum for a scalp that does not want to be provoked.

  • Fragrance free from a brand that could easily have scented it
  • Sits under styling without separating
  • Act+Acre publishes its full list on the product page
Texture
Clear gel-fluid that absorbs without tack
Key ingredients
Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture Extract · Bambusa Vulgaris Leaf/Stem Extract · Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice · Glycerin
Fragrance
Fragrance free. No parfum and no declared allergens.

The expensive one. Worth it if fragrance is the thing keeping you out of this category.

OUAI Scalp Serum
03

OUAI Scalp Serum

Scalp USA Approx. $54

The most pleasant one to actually use, and the one most likely to become a habit. Habit is most of what a scalp serum needs.

  • The texture is genuinely nice, which matters for daily use
  • Hyaluronic acid high in the list
  • Priced below the Act+Acre
Texture
Light watery serum with a slight silicone slip
Key ingredients
Rhodiola Rosea Extract · Sodium Hyaluronate · Polyquaternium-7 · Tocopheryl Acetate
Fragrance
Scented. Parfum plus declared eugenol, limonene and linalool.

Buy it for the experience. Skip it if fragrance is your problem, because this one names three allergens.

Act+Acre Scalp Detox Oil
04

Act+Acre Scalp Detox Oil

Scalp USA Approx. $48

An entirely waterless formula that softens buildup before shampoo rather than trying to treat the scalp and be a leave-in at the same time. It does one job.

  • Waterless, so nothing here is doing preservation duty
  • Sunflower and soybean lead, baobab is a real inclusion
  • Rinses out cleanly with one wash
Texture
Dry-feeling oil, thinner than it looks
Key ingredients
Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil · Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil · Adansonia Digitata (Baobab) Seed Oil · Isostearyl Linoleate
Fragrance
Fragrance free. No parfum in the list.

A pre-wash oil, not a leave-in. Treat it that way and it is excellent.

Act+Acre Salicylic Acid Scalp Exfoliator
05

Act+Acre Salicylic Acid Scalp Exfoliator

Scalp USA Approx. $48

Chemical exfoliation instead of grit, which is the right answer on a scalp you cannot see and are working on by feel.

  • No particles to rinse out of dense hair
  • Humectants sit high in the list, so it is not purely stripping
  • Once a week is genuinely enough
Texture
Clear gel that foams slightly on the scalp
Key ingredients
Salicylic Acid · Methyl Gluceth-20 · Betaine · Cocamidopropyl Betaine
Fragrance
Fragrance free. No parfum in the list.

The weekly reset. Do not use it more often than the label says.

Act+Acre Scalp Gua Sha Tool
06

Act+Acre Scalp Gua Sha Tool

Tools USA Approx. $48

It is the honest version of a scalp tool: a shaped stone that helps you spread a product and take your time, with no motor and no claim attached.

  • Nothing to charge and nothing to break
  • The teeth are wide enough not to drag
  • It makes the oil step feel worth doing
Form
Cool solid stone with a wide-tooth edge

A pleasant object, not a device. It is not a growth tool and Act+Acre does not say it is.

Crown Affair The Comb No. 001
07

Crown Affair The Comb No. 001

Tools USA Approx. $42

Injection-moulded combs carry a seam down the middle of every tooth, and that seam is what catches. This one is cut and polished instead.

  • No moulding seam to snag on
  • Wide enough for wet hair
  • It will outlast every plastic comb you have owned
Form
Cellulose acetate, hand-finished, no seam

A lot of money for a comb, and still the one we would buy.

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt
08

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt

Treatments France Approx. $41

The colorist to French cinema bottled his backstage scalp reset and it became the category's reference product: a salt scrub that physically clears buildup, then rinses to a clean the serums on this shelf can actually reach. The jar most scalp routines should start with, once a week.

  • The physical reset the serums need
  • Salt does the work, oil keeps it civil
  • A Paris colorist's actual backstage tool
Texture
A salt paste that melts into a foam as you massage
Key ingredients
Sea salt · Sweet almond oil
Fragrance
Scented

The weekly reset the scalp shelf was missing.
