The Caviar Problem: Skincare Ingredients That Sound Like They Belong on a Tasting Menu

There is a kind of ingredient that exists to be said aloud at a counter. Caviar. Gold. Diamond. Placenta. Pitera, which is a yeast but does not sound like one. They are not fraudulent, most of them do something on the skin, but they are chosen for the sentence as much as for the formula, and the sentence is part of what you are paying for.

Ten products built on that kind of ingredient, read for what else is in the jar. Five of them are the Skin Caviar line at La Prairie, the reference case: the serum, the cream, the fluid, the eye cream and the sleep mask, and in four of the five the working ingredients are butters and oils, shea, squalane, almond, meadowfoam and mango, sitting above the caviar extract on the list and below it on the jar. Then two gold creams, from Chantecaille and Omorovicza, a placenta cream from London, the richest SK-II, and the Natura Bissé infusion with diamond in the name.

None of this is a complaint. A rose-water ceramide cream in a gold jar is still a rose-water ceramide cream, and some of the best textures on The Shelf are on this page. The problem in the title is only that the word on the front is rarely the ingredient doing the work, and the list on the back, which we have read for you, usually is.

La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream

The cobalt jar that made La Prairie, on sale since 1998 and reformulated more than once since. Shea and sweet almond oil high on the list under the caviar extract the brand now calls Caviar Premier. It is the reference luxury cream, and priced like the reference: six hundred and ten dollars.

Rose water is third on the list, then shea, olive oil and squalane, then the ceramides the cream is built on. The gold is in the name and the jar; the formula underneath is a rich cream from a family house that has always been better than its packaging suggests.

Built on the thermal water from the Budapest springs the brand is named for, with beeswax, squalane, shea and lanolin: an old-fashioned barrier balm with colloidal gold and peptides added. Omorovicza calls it a rescue cream, and for dry, reactive skin that is fair.

Dr Maryam Zamani is a London oculoplastic surgeon, and this is the richest cream in her range: squalane second on the list, built around a liposome-encapsulated complex of amino acids and vitamins the brand calls M5Rx. The bio-placenta in the name is the brand's term for a lab-made complex, not an animal ingredient.
