The Acne Edit on The Shelf is the gentle cabinet: the patches, the low-dose acids, the cleansers that do no harm. It is the right place to start and the wrong place to be in week six of a breakout that has stopped responding to politeness. This is the other cabinet, the one with the percentages printed on the front.

Ten products, every one with a stated active at a stated strength. Benzoyl peroxide at the full ten percent from Jan Marini. Adapalene at 0.1 percent, the retinoid that went over the counter, from La Roche-Posay. Salicylic acid at two percent from PCA, SkinMedica, First Aid Beauty and Jan Marini again, each in a different base. Azelaic acid from La Roche-Posay and Epionce, sulfur and resorcinol in the Epionce spot gel, and the Sunday Riley oil that carries its salicylic acid in seed oils. The patch is here too, but it is the jumbo one with actives in it.

A cabinet is not a routine. Do not use all of these at once; benzoyl peroxide and adapalene each earn a night of their own before they share one, and the acids stack faster than skin can tolerate. If a breakout is painful, scarring or has been going for months, the right shelf is the dermatologist's, not ours. These are cosmetics for the stretch between the patch and the appointment.
