There is already a Japanese shelf on this site, and it is full of the formulas that made it across: the Hada Labo lotions, Curel, Bioré, DHC. This is the other list. These are the ones that stayed home, where the only way to own them is for somebody to put them in a box in Japan and post it to you.

That is a real distinction and not a romantic one. Several brands here sell a different formula in America under the same name, because the American version has to clear a different regulatory bar and usually a different price point. Others simply never bothered. Minon is what Japanese dermatology clinics hand to people whose skin has stopped tolerating things, and it is close to invisible here. Senka Perfect Whip has been one of the best selling face washes in Japan for the better part of two decades and costs five dollars and sixty two cents. Apagard is a toothpaste, which is not skincare at all, and you cannot walk through a Japanese drugstore without passing it.

Ten products, and one of them needs reading before you buy it. The LION Pair Acne Cream is sold in Japan as an over-the-counter medicine, not a cosmetic, and its two actives are not in the American over-the-counter acne monograph. It is not an FDA-approved acne product here. We have put it on the page as exactly that, because plenty of sites sell it without saying so, and because what it actually is happens to be the more interesting story.

Read this one carefully, because it is not a cosmetic. Pair Acne Cream W is sold in Japan as an over-the-counter medicine, and its two actives are ibuprofen piconol and isopropylmethylphenol. Neither is in the American over-the-counter acne monograph, which recognises benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur and resorcinol and nothing else. So this is not an FDA-approved acne product in the United States, and we are not going to tell you what it does. What we can tell you is that it is a fixture of the Japanese pharmacy aisle, that Japanese friends bring it back by the tube, and that it is here because you asked where it comes from.
