Fine Mist: The Korean Cream Mist, Read Properly

A thermal water is not a cream mist. Eleven bottles you spray at a desk, from an $11 French classic to a $60 ionic one.

Fine Mist: The Korean Cream Mist, Read Properly

The face mist has had two lives. The first was the French one: mineral water in a can, sprayed on a hot face, evaporated a minute later taking some of your own moisture with it. The second is the Korean one, and it is a different object. A cream mist is a moisturizer thin enough to atomise, a jelly mist is a humectant gel that clings instead of running off, and a capsule mist is a serum in a bottle you shake. All three go on over makeup at three in the afternoon, which is the point of the format.

Eleven bottles, read by what is in them. Four Korean cream and jelly mists from the Seoul list, all under thirty dollars: BIOHEAL BOH's ferment cream mist, Dr. Althea's sea-water jelly and its fragrance-free 345 mist, and Anua's PDRN capsule mist, which is the brand's serum in a sprayable bottle. Beside them, the mists the shelf already carried for a reason: VT's plant-PDRN ampoule mist, Aestura's cream mist from the Calm Routine, Tatcha's dewy one, Immunocologie's ionic mineral mist, Tower 28's hypochlorous spray, and the two French cans, Avène and Evian, which are here so you can see the difference.

Several of these carry words on the bottle we are not repeating as claims. Lifting, 3D and Relief are product names. What a mist can do is put water or a thin layer of moisture back on skin that has gone tight, without disturbing what is on it. The cream ones do that best on dry skin, the jellies on oily skin, and the thermal waters on nobody for very long.

BIOHEAL BOH Probioderm 3D Lifting Cream Mist, 100ml
01

BIOHEAL BOH Probioderm 3D Lifting Cream Mist, 100ml

Mists South Korea Approx. $21

The Korean cream mist is a different object from a thermal water: it is a moisturizer thin enough to atomise, so it goes on over makeup without moving it. BIOHEAL BOH's version is built on its Probioderm ferment, and it is the one of the five we tried whose finish reads closest to a cream, with no bead and no drip. The name says 3D and Lifting; that is the product's name, and we stop there. What it does is put a layer of moisture back on a face that has gone flat by three.

Dr. Althea Aqua Marine Jelly Mist, 100ml
02

Dr. Althea Aqua Marine Jelly Mist, 100ml

Mists South Korea Approx. $20

The plain hydrating one. No ferment story, no DNA, no name to apologise for: a sea-water jelly that cools on contact and leaves the kind of damp-looking finish glass skin is built on. The jelly texture is the point, because it clings where a thermal water runs off, and it carries no oil, so it is the mist for the face that goes shiny by noon.

  • Cools on contact
  • Nothing to argue with on the label
  • Under twenty dollars
Texture
A cool, lightly viscous jelly that sprays fine and settles without tack
Key ingredients
Deep sea water · Hyaluronic acid · Marine humectants

Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Capsule Mist, 100ml
03

Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Capsule Mist, 100ml

Mists South Korea Approx. $26

Anua's Capsule 100 serum is the hydration-first reading of the PDRN wave, and this is the same idea in a bottle you shake and spray. The capsules are the serum's delivery system, not decoration, and the formula reads the same on the label: salmon-derived PDRN carried on hyaluronic acid, no artificial fragrance. The sensible way to use PDRN during the day is to keep the skin wet, and this is the format that does it.

  • The serum's formula in a sprayable bottle
  • No artificial fragrance
  • Fine, even mist
Texture
A watery serum with visible capsules that shake up and spray as a fine mist
Key ingredients
PDRN (sodium DNA) · Hyaluronic acid, several weights · Capsule delivery
Fragrance
No artificial fragrance

Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream Mist, 100ml
04

Dr. Althea 345 Relief Cream Mist, 100ml

Mists South Korea Approx. $20

Dr. Althea's 345 Relief Cream is on the PDRN page for its plant DNA; the mist is the same calm idea without that story, which is why it lands on the sensitive-skin shelf instead. Niacinamide and a ceramide in a fragrance-free milky mist, at under twenty dollars, is the least eventful cream mist on this site, and for a face that reacts to things that is the compliment.

  • Fragrance-free
  • Ceramide in a mist, which is rare
  • Under twenty dollars
Texture
A thin milky mist that leaves a soft, non-tacky film
Key ingredients
Niacinamide · Ceramide NP · Panthenol

VT Cosmetics PDRN Glow Ampoule Mist, 100ml
05

VT Cosmetics PDRN Glow Ampoule Mist, 100ml

Mists South Korea Approx. $16

The PDRN here is plant-derived, from wild ginseng rather than salmon, which is worth saying plainly because the two are not the same molecule and the brand does not hide it. What makes it worth a place is the format: an ampoule thin enough to spray, so it goes on over makeup at three in the afternoon.

  • Sprays over makeup without moving it
  • Plant-derived, stated
  • Fragrance-free
  • Under twenty dollars
Texture
Creamy ampoule delivered as a fine mist
Key ingredients
Phyto PDRN from Panax ginseng · Ceramide NP · Panthenol · Allantoin

Aestura Atobarrier365 Cream Mist
06

Aestura Atobarrier365 Cream Mist

Moisturizers South Korea Approx. $24

Worth buying and worth a caveat. The bottle says ten thousand ppm ceramides. The ingredient list Aestura publishes does not contain a ceramide. What it does contain is cholesterol, behenic acid and hydroxypropyl bislauramide MEA, which is a pseudo-ceramide, and together those three are the same lipid structure arrived at another way. The formula is good and the mist itself is the best of its kind we have used. We are flagging the gap between the bottle and the list rather than repeating the number.

  • The finest mist of any we have tried, so it tops up over makeup without wrecking it
  • Sixteen ingredients, no fragrance, nothing to react to
  • Cholesterol and behenic acid doing real barrier work
Texture
A mist that lands like a thin cream, fine enough that it does not run down your face
Key ingredients
Cholesterol · Behenic acid · Tocopherol
Fragrance
No fragrance or parfum in the ingredient list

A very good barrier mist with a number on the bottle we cannot find in the list.

Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist
07

Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist

Moisturizers USA Approx. $50

An oil-in-essence mist with squalane: it moisturizes instead of dampening a face and evaporating off it, so it goes over makeup without lifting the base. Fifty dollars is a lot for a mist. You are buying a finish, not an active.

  • Oil-in-essence, so it does not just evaporate
  • Goes over makeup without disturbing it
  • Fifty dollars for a finish, not a treatment
Texture
A fine oil-in-essence mist that resets makeup and dryness mid-day
Key ingredients
Squalane · Green tea · Rice ferment

Immunocologie Vital Ionic Mist, 100ml
08

Immunocologie Vital Ionic Mist, 100ml

Toners USA Approx. $60

Glass skin is layers of water held in place, and the mist is the layer that keeps the others going. This one is French green clay water, the mineral fraction of the clay suspended in ionized water rather than the clay itself, so it goes on clear and leaves nothing behind. Twelve minerals, no alcohol, nothing that stings. It is the product the brand tells sensitive and immunocompromised skin to start with, which tells you how quiet it is. Sixty dollars for a hundred millilitres is a lot for water, and the honest answer is that you are paying for the clay source and the fact that it does not cause anything.

  • Mineral water, not clay, so it goes on clear
  • Quiet enough for the most reactive faces
  • Works over makeup as well as under it
Texture
A fine, even mist of mineral water that sits on the skin without beading
